Arsenal have reportedly received and rejected Real Madrid’s offer to sign William Saliba in exchange for Rodrygo.

The Gunners started the Premier League season with a 1-0 win against Manchester United on Sunday, but the team’s performance against the Red Devils was worrying.

Striker Viktor Gyökeres failed to produce a single shot in the game, while United had 61% possession and created 22 shots against the London side.

If it hadn’t been for the team’s solid defence, led by centre-back Saliba, manager Mikel Arteta could have suffered defeat in the first round of the league.

The defender has been linked with Real Madrid, and Marca claims that Arsenal immediately rejected a proposed swap for winger Rodrygo going to the Emirates in exchange for the Frenchman.

Mikel Arteta’s transfer risk with William Saliba and Bukayo Saka
William Saliba has been one of the Premier League’s best defenders in recent seasons, with his defensive acumen and ball skills making him an important piece for Arteta.

The Frenchman only has two years left on his contract, and while there is no reason to panic, Real have shown with Trent Alexander-Arnold that they can persuade star players to let their contracts expire.

Arsenal’s talisman Bukayo Saka also has two years left on his deal, and while both seem fit at the Emirates, they lack the trophy that their talents deserve.

The Gunners finished second in the Premier League for the last three seasons, and if they fail to top the table again, it could make the players consider the future when they only have one year left on their contracts.

Why Arsenal could still need Real Madrid’s Rodrygo
If Arsenal are to win the league in 2025-26, striker Gyökeres will need to deliver consistently in attack, but the Swede didn’t impress at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Arsenal as a team struggled against United, with just 0.28 xG from open games, and it seems that the club has yet to solve the creative challenges of last year.

Rodrygo is far more comfortable between the opposition lines than Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli, and his ability to influence play against deep defensive blocks could help the London side create more chances for Gyökeres.

If there are financial means for his signing, Arteta’s squad could benefit greatly from the addition of the Los Blancos striker.
