Real Madrid have a plan that they believe is a “win win” situation, but we doubt that Benfica are particularly happy. The plan from the Spanish capital is for Manchester United to buy back Álvaro Carreras for £15 million and then sell him to them for £30 million. – If Manchester United join this chess move, Real Madrid will save millions!
Álvaro Carreras has never been able to play for Manchester United’s first team, in the four years he has been under contract there have been three loan spells and games for junior teams. Carreras, who also has a past at Real Madrid’s academy, has taken off for Benfica after joining the Portuguese club on a cheap price last summer.

One of the areas Madrid want to strengthen in the summer transfer window is left-back. Ferland Mendy and Fran García are currently the two main options for Los Blancos in this position, and the Spanish giants have identified Álvaro Carreras as a viable option.
According to AS, Madrid have been toying with the idea of bringing Carreras back to the Santiago Bernabéu for some time.
The 22-year-old left-back belonged to Madrid from 2017 to 2020 before going to England and signing for Man Utd.
The Spanish youngster failed to establish himself in the first team of United and had loan spells at Preston North End, Granada and Benfica before signing a permanent deal with the Portuguese giants last summer for just €6 million.
Manchester United have a €18 million buy-back clause in Carreras’ contract.
Although Manchester United were linked with the left-back in the January window, they instead signed Patrick Dorgu from Lecce, while manager Rúben Amorim also has the option of using Luke Shaw or Harry Amass in that role.
Although Madrid are interested in a summer deal for Carreras, last year’s La Liga champions do not want to pay the €60 million buyout fee in his contract.
Instead, Los Blancos will try to persuade Manchester United to sign the 22-year-old by triggering the buy-back clause, and then sign him from the Premier League club for a sum between €30 million and €35 million.
“Win-win” situation
AS describes such an agreement as a “win-win situation” for both clubs.
Madrid will be able to sign Carreras for less than the ransom, while Man Utd will make a handsome profit on a player they don’t need.
Carreras has been a star for Benfica this season, and considering he is only 22 years old and has great potential, it is no surprise that Madrid are interested in bringing him back.
The left-back has scored four goals and provided five assists in 47 appearances for Benfica this season. The club is currently tied with Sporting CP at the top of the Liga Portugal.
Carreras’ own comment
Earlier this season, when he was linked with United, Carreras stated about his future:
“I’m focused on what I have to do, because we have games every three days. It’s always positive that there are interested parties – everyone wants to develop – but I really enjoy it here. United have a buy-back clause, but I’m very happy at Benfica.”
“I have a five-year contract here. I want to win titles and keep growing – I’m still only 21 years old. I want to win, whether it’s with Spain or Benfica, and continue my development.”
