When Carrick was chosen as interim United manager ahead of Solskjaer, the Englishman’s acceptance weighed heavily on the fact that it was only about work for the rest of the season. It was clear that Racliffe and the gang are now targeting a coach who has already shown he can lead clubs to the biggest titles. Roy Keane stated Carrick would not get the permanent coaching job anyway, even if he won every game. Now it is reported that Carrick is on the list of candidates.

Gary Neville has strong opinions about his old club Manchester United and does not hold back on criticism of players, coaches, owners and management. The United legend got under the skin of Ruben Amorim, and is part of the “pack” of United legends who make a living from making weekly headlines with their analysis of the Premier League. You don’t have to like Neville to listen to him, if there’s one thing that’s certain, it’s that he’s very well informed about a lot of what’s going on behind the scenes at Old Trafford. Now he has a mood report on Carrick as a candidate for the permanent coaching job.

“It’s a very difficult situation because because of what’s happened, a lot of people are now talking about giving Carrick the job, or that he should be considered, and it’s only going to increase in strength the more he wins, and the closer he gets to Champions League qualification,” Neville begins on the Sky Sports podcast.

But what is said?

“They said they have started the process now of looking for another manager, and that’s good to hear because you need to plan for everything. They have started the process of talking to and looking at other managers, building up data, and analysing who should be the next manager of the club. What they said is that they are not going to be pressured – regardless of what happens on the pitch in terms of wins, draws or losses in the next few months – to make a hire. They’re going to wait until the end of the season,” Neville continues.

Which makes a surprising statement about Carrick as United manager.

“I actually said it a few weeks ago, that I wondered if Michael would actually say no. Michael is the type who will always do what benefits the club. He can do that, but it could also be that he says that he feels comfortable enough, and has built such a good relationship with the players and the support staff, that he wants to launch his own candidacy.

“In that case, Michael Carrick, as in any other recruitment process in any other business, will be part of a process where he will be fighting Thomas Tuchel and all the others who are going to be available this summer, and I think that’s fair,” Neville concluded.

Four games, four wins, with an energy in the squad and on with the supporters Ruben Amorim had to look far behind in his 14-month period in the same job. We love Carrick definitely being on the list of candidates.
