It’s been a week since The Athletic reported Arsenal and Sporting finally agreed on a total sum for Gyökeres’ transfer. Since then, there have been high waves and gusts of wind in the negotiations – and silence. Now, Portuguese media are reporting the entire transfer could go awry.
Arsenal have offered €63.5 million plus €10 million in bonuses, which has been accepted as a basis because the player’s agent Hasan Cetinkaya has waived seven million euros in fees. It is the bonus packages that create a lot of controversy.

According to A Bola, it all depends on how easily the bonuses of 10 million euros are achievable. Sporting want them to be realistically determined.
The Portuguese media reports one bonus right now is that Arsenal will pay 2.5 million euros after Gyökeres has played 20 games for the club. Sporting are happy with that – but the remaining bonuses are far from satisfactory for the Portuguese club. So unsatisfactory that Sporting threaten to withdraw. The Portuguese media claims that the Sporting management is “unwavering” in its demands, and the risk that the transfer – after “six days without movement – will therefore collapse is “high”.
The Athletic and transfer journalist Romano, who are not shy about being asked to comment on new developments in transfer processes, have remained calm. What this means is not good to know.
