Swimming in money after being sacked from Manchester United
On Monday (5 January), Amorim was sacked from Manchester United just hours after leading the team’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday (4 January).
In recent weeks, Amorim has appeared frustrated in press conferences, and after the Leeds game, he claimed that he wanted to be United’s “manager” and not just a coach.
This led to speculation as to whether there had been disagreement between the Portuguese and United’s management over his preferred 3-4-3 formation and player recruitment.
As reported by The Athletic, the decision was made by the club’s management team, including CEO Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox, following a “breakdown in relations” between them and the 40-year-old.
In a club statement, United also described how the club’s management “reluctantly” made the decision to sack Amorim and thanked him for his contribution to the football club.
This comes just 14 months after United paid £9.25 million to sign Amorim from Sporting CP in November 2024.

At that time, Amorim signed a contract until 2027 with the option of another year. The deal reportedly did not include a clause for a discounted departure, meaning United will have to pay out his contract in full.
And with reports from The Sporting News suggesting that Amorim received around £125,000 a week (£6.5 million a year), this equates to a payout of £9,625,000, as he has 77 weeks left on his deal until June 30, 2027.
Amorim brought five coaches – Carlos Fernandes, Jorge Vital, Adelio Candido, Emanuel Ferro and Paulo Barreira – with him from Sporting, meaning they are likely to be compensated if they leave the club. Although details about the quintet’s future are still unclear.
As reported by ESPN, United were forced to pay a £14.5 million compensation bill to Erik ten Hag, his coaching staff and then-sporting director Dan Ashworth following the Dutchman’s departure in October 2024.
Following Amorim’s departure, former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca and current Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner have emerged as the favourites to fill the vacancy.
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team on an interim basis and will be on the bench for United’s Premier League game against Burnley on Wednesday (January 7).
