He worked as an assistant coach for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United until the summer of 2024, when he wanted to test himself as a head coach. Mitchell van der Gaag didn’t get the last few chaotic months in the job before his boss, Ten Hag, was sacked at the end of October, but the Dutchman must be said to have gained a good insight into United’s challenges as a club. Now he is giving Ten Hag replacement Ruben Amorim support, even after “the weakest United season ever in the Premier League”.

“A coach always needs wins to get his ideas across and for the players to believe in him. It’s always difficult to come in the middle of the season, and even more difficult with the changes that are happening, especially outside the club,” the former United coach begins, according to Goal.

“It’s in the structure, the training center, the stadium, and there are people who can’t stay at the club and who want to be fired. There is a lot going on around the club,” the Dutchman continues.

Who believes Amorim has the qualities, but works under almost impossible working conditions.

“Then a top coach comes along, but he faces this reality and he has no control over it and he has to work. It’s not easy, and I hope he gets time to change things, because it’s not easy,” says Mitchell van der Gaag.
