Ruben Amorim was thrown into the Premier League with the recipe for how to play proper football, like at Sporting. What the Portuguese first had to learn was how to deal with the English media. The first few weeks there were smiles, laughter and talk about the future. Then came the defeats, which continued, and went on and on. Although the Premier League season was never lifted for United supporters, Amorim has at least understood how to treat English journalists: Give them the right hooks for the headlines, and you won’t have them making their own.

Ready-made headlines and angles are hammered right into the keyboard. So when the English media meets Amorim with a gloomy this-goes-enough-to-football-hell face, the United manager puts the success in the Europa League and the continued possibility of a title/Champions League ticket in perspective.

“We are not going to change anything. We know that this season has been a disappointment. Nothing will change. I have to think about it a little more, but that’s how I feel. I still feel that this season is the worst in the last 50 years,” Amorim said before the game. This was self-awareness, so the journalist does not have to ask the question.

Then comes offensive Amorim.

“At the end of the season, we could be the worst team in Premier League history with a European title,” says Amorim. Not without a sly Portuguese smile.

The United manager still hasn’t cracked the codes in the Premier League arenas, but at the press conferences it’s starting to stick.
