Ryan Giggs has urged Michael Carrick to sign Adam Wharton in the summer, claiming that the Crystal Palace midfielder already “looks like a Manchester United player”.

United are on the hunt for a new midfielder in the summer, as Casemiro is set to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Giggs believes Wharton, who Palace value at £70m, should be one of United’s priorities in the summer transfer window, but insists his old club should sign two midfielders, with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson being a prominent candidate.

“First of all, we have to deal with our players who have been on loan – Rashford, Sancho, Hojlund – we have to deal with all of them, but the priority is definitely the midfield. I can definitely see two signings,” Giggs said in an interview with Webby & O’Neill.

“It looks like Mainoo is staying, Casemiro is leaving, Ugarte is leaving, and we need to strengthen the midfield without a doubt.”

“I always like to have a left-footed player on the team, so I don’t want to argue with Wharton. I think he looks like a Manchester United player, to be honest.”

“Someone who can handle the ball, play forward, run forward, has Premier League experience – everyone has Premier League experience, so I wouldn’t be against that.”

“I like Anderson too – solid player. Plays every match. I can see a Wharton and Mainoo, an Anderson and Wharton—I can see all of these scenarios. It just depends on the price. UK players cost a lot of money, and what we can afford to spend. But we need two midfielders,” he added.

Giggs has also urged the United management to keep Carrick as manager and not look at options such as Luis Enrique, Julian Nagelsmann or Oliver Glasner.

“The hardest thing in the world as a manager is to win games, and he does that. We’ve lost one game,” Giggs said.

“Not only that, but also the feeling around the club. Before, we didn’t know what we were getting when we went to a game. Now everything has changed. The fans come to the games or watch TV and think, ‘OK, we’ve got a big chance here.'”

“We’re looking up now, not down – can we catch up with City? The turnaround has been fantastic. I think all of us – at least I – thought we needed seven or eight players. Now it’s maybe about three or four in the summer, which is more achievable than seven or eight players.”

“There is no … I can’t look past Michael right now. I really can’t.”

“I think he has brought a calmness to the club. I think he will bring in Manchester United players because he knows the club.”

“Give him time and I think he’ll go from strength to strength,” Giggs said.
