Last season’s top scorer in the title season, a weekly wage of around £400,000. This was the start of the 2025/26 season. Then there was a drought. Liverpool fans took it for granted that their Mo was behind the penultimate and final kick before scoring, the Egyptian superstar was conspicuous by his absence. Then came bench life and the conflict with Slot. On Wednesday, this was forgotten. Even with a penalty miss, Salah led Liverpool to the quarter-finals of the Champons League.

Mohamed Salah missed a penalty, scored a goal and was substituted as Liverpool beat Galatasaray 4-0 in the last eight of the Champions League, following a tough 1-0 defeat in Istanbul. After the game, Slot spent a lot of time paying tribute to the superstar he barely spoke to before the New Year.

“The goal says a lot about him after missing a penalty just before halftime. It can sometimes be difficult for an individual player or for a team, so kudos to the team for the way we came out in the second half, because we have had a lot of back-to-back goals this season. We have had many halves where we have created chance after chance without getting the full benefit of our performance, says Slot to the club’s website.

“But then “Mo” and the team came out for the second half, which they did. He first set up Hugo with a fantastic assist and then scored a classic Salah goal, which he has done many times in this stadium and for this club, where he pulls into the box and finishes in the corner. That says something about his mental strength, but certainly also about the team’s, because adversity is definitely something we can talk about when it comes to this season,” Arne Slot continues.

As promises, he was not the one who benched Salah.

“He asked to be substituted – not because he thought he had scored enough, but because he felt something, so let’s see where he stands in relation to the weekend and beyond,” the Liverpool coach concludes on the club’s website.
