The Catalan giants, who lead La Liga and are one of the last four in the Champions League, are still not completely out of their financial problems.

Saudi superpower chases Barcelona’s stars

The growing influence of Saudi Arabian football shows no signs of stopping, and now they have set their sights on one of the world’s most iconic clubs: FC Barcelona. The clubs Al Nassr, Al Hilal and Al Ittihad from the Saudi Pro League have already made contact with Barcelona’s management to secure several key players for next season.

With virtually unlimited financial means, the Saudi clubs aim to make a quality run by bringing in players from Barça’s squad.

Raphinha on the radar

According to sources, Al Hilal – the club that previously brought Neymar to the Arabian Peninsula – has particular interest in Raphinha, one of the season’s big profiles and a strong candidate for the Ballon d’Or. Although Barcelona are negotiating a contract extension with the Brazilian, the financial differences could suddenly open a door for Saudi Arabia.

Defence and midfield in the spotlight

Al Nassr are focusing on strengthening their defence and have asked about Barcelona defenders Jules Koundé and Ronald Araújo. Barcelona initially do not want to sell any of them, but players like Andreas Christensen could be relevant if they receive a convincing offer.

In midfield, Frenkie de Jong is a main target for Al Ittihad, although the Dutchman is likely to extend his contract with Barcelona. But Saudi interest is unlikely to disappear easily, and repeated bids may come.

Barcelona in financial pinch

Barcelona, who need revenue to balance their accounts, can see these approaches as a quick financial solution – even if it will be a sportingly painful decision.

One thing is clear: Saudi Arabia is aiming high and will continue to play a prominent role in the transfer market.

Should all players be sold this summer, about 400 million will remain at Camp Nou after being “ripped off” by Saudi Arabia.
