Many shouted for Emiliano Martinez, as Manchester United had to secure a new goalkeeper on Deadline Day. The choice fell on a Belgian goalkeeper not many in Manchester had heard of. Three months later, the enthusiasm is great for Senne Lammens. On Tuesday, the 23-year-old took another step towards expectations of the “next Courtois” in the Belgian national team.
In the Premier League, Manchester United “stopped” losing from their debut game to Lammens. The Belgian played a pivotal role in United’s revival in October, helping the team secure consecutive victories over Sunderland, Liverpool and Brighton. His performances have led to comparisons with legendary United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, or as United supporters sang in his debut: “Are you Schmeichel in disguise?”

Lammens takes this with great calm, he repeats he has “a long way to go”. Sir Alex Ferguson can’t hide his enthusiasm for the United goalkeeper. In an interview with Raceday RT, the iconic United manager spoke warmly of Lammens: “… Especially the goalkeeper has been outstanding, he has only played three or four games and he looks very good.”
After the win at Anfield, we could see Peter Schmeichel with a wide grin, down by the Man Utd players and Senne Lammens handing out bear hugs.
On Tuesday, the national team debut for Belgium came. The opposition was small Lichtenstein, but no one should take away Lammen’s cred for clean sheet in his debut that ended with a 7-0 victory for Belgium.
