Scott McTominay has been tipped for a surprise return to the Premier League this summer – to a destination that will provoke strong reactions from his former club Manchester United.

The Scotland international has had a phenomenal debut season for Serie A leaders Napoli following his £25.7 million move from United. With 11 league goals, he has impressed even the discerning Italian press:

Antonio Giordano of the legendary Gazzetta dello Sport called him a “genius” after his goals against Torino at the weekend – goals that helped Napoli take advantage of Inter’s surprise loss to Roma and take a three-point lead in the series.

Experienced Neapolitan coach Carmine Gautieri (54), currently clubless, was full of praise for McTominay during an interview on Radio Capri:

  • “He was an excellent buy. We are talking about a complete player – he has speed, fits in well, can shoot and also scores with his head. I have to admit that I didn’t expect this, so congratulations to those who brought him to Naples.”

Impossible!

Gautieri added:

  • “A player with his profile could easily fit in at clubs like Real Madrid or Manchester City. At the moment, he is among the strongest midfielders in Europe.”

While a move to Manchester City after 22 years at United seems unlikely, this recognition underlines McTominay’s increased value in the transfer market.
