Former Manchester United player Scott McTominay could be on the verge of a surprise transfer, having settled in and truly flourished at Napoli.

After 22 years at Manchester United, where he played in both the youth team and the first team, McTominay left the club in the summer of 2024.

The Scotland captain joined Serie A in a deal worth just £25.7 million with Napoli, and has since established himself as one of Europe’s best midfielders.

Just months after leaving Old Trafford, McTominay was named Serie A’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) after he finished the 2024/25 season with 12 goals in the league, while Napoli won the league championship.

His impressive form has led to rumours that McTominay could soon leave Napoli, with a new report claiming that there is one club that appears to be the clear favourite to secure his signature.

Since McTominay’s move to Napoli, clubs such as Tottenham, Newcastle United and Barcelona have all been linked with a possible move for the Scot.

However, according to Italian Tuttomercatoweb, Manchester United are “leading the way” in the race to sign McTominay, in what will be a spectacular return to Old Trafford.

The report claims that McTominay is “dreaming of a return” to England and that United could be the perfect option.

It says that McTominay is still thriving at Napoli, but that he would like to have the opportunity to return to his former club, now that he has proven his worth abroad, if the chance arises.

If it becomes clear that McTominay is keen to return to the Premier League, it is likely that more clubs will make bids for the 29-year-old.

And with a contract tying him to Napoli until 2028, it is likely that the Italian club will demand a significant sum for their star midfielder. Transfermarkt estimates his worth at around £39 million.

However, the report contradicts an earlier claim by Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via football365, who insisted that McTominay intends to stay at Napoli for the foreseeable future.

It is claimed that both McTominay and Napoli are keen to extend his contract, and an offer that will keep him at the club until 2030 is believed to be under negotiation.
