Milos Raonic has been absent from tennis for several years due to relentless injuries. In the Canadian Open he played for the first time since 2019 and immediately proved that he still has this “something” in him. The Canadian sensationally defeated one of the favorites of the tournament—Frances Tiafoe. Raonic served 37 aces in the match!
This is the return of Milos Raonic to the game everyone was counting on. Milos Raonic defeats Frances Tiafoe in his first match at the Canadian Open since 2019.
Milos Raonic got the right to play in the Canadian Open thanks to the organizers of the event, who gave him a wild card. The tennis world was curious to see how Raonic would deal with the pressure of playing in front of his home crowd, whom he had not seen since 2019. I knew it could be a good match. After all, on the opposite side of the net stood the now top player Frances Tiafoe, and Milos Raonic was once the number 3 in the world. The meeting turned out to be more than good, it was sensational. The men played three sets, two of which ended in tie-breaks. Milos Raonic served 37 aces and even more, he managed to tip the scales in his favor and outplay Tiafoe in the third set without having to play a tie-break.
Milso Raonic defeated Frances Tiafoe in three sets, 6-7(12), 7-6(4), 6-3. In front of a wildly enthusiastic crowd that included his wife and parents, Raonic kept his composure until the last ball. Almost. Apart from a brief debate with head umpire Fergus Murphy and tournament umpire Gerry Armstrong about the controversial end of the opening set – Tiafoe touched the net after the winning drop shot, but because he touched the net area outside the singles area (already beyond the line on the net touching the out line on the cour), he was awarded a point (see video below) – Raonic barely uttered a word during the thrilling two-hour, 44-minute triumph. Tiafoe would be stripped of this point if he did so in a doubles match where the entire net area counts as the field of play.
Listen to Raonic’s post-match interview in the video below and find out what he had to say.
