The Stockholm club AIK reminds us of what it was like in Vålerenga at its worst. Miserable and messy finances, quarrels on the hill, on the board and among fans. AIK was in complete chaos when Thomas Berntsen, who came from over a decade as sports director in Sarpsborg 08, came to the club in April 2023.
The economy was in a slump and the performances on the pitch were woeful. Players had to be sold at the same time as the results on the pitch had to improve. Thomas Berntsen made a mistake and brought in Henning Berg, who was fired quite quickly after disagreement about how hard the players should train. – A mistake that was corrected by bringing in Icelandic Mikkjal Thomassen who everyone agrees is doing a good job.

AIK, which in the 2023 season landed in a dismal 11th place in Allsvenskan, climbed last season to 3rd place and secured play in Europe.
In the last two seasons, AIK has sold players for 16.7 million euros, while it has been bought for 5.23 million euros.
Aftonbladet writes in a shocking article that Thomas Berntsen disagrees with the board on a number of issues and may be forced out of the club. They write that several in “Gnaget’s” board want Berntsen removed.
Meetings about Berntsen’s future are said to have been held on Friday. Club director Fredrik Söderberg has also been in Karlberg for talks, Aftonbladet continues. Nothing is hammered out and ready yet, and it remains to be seen if Thomas Berntsen will manage to keep his job as sports director at AIK.
Really smart to create chaos days before Allsvenskan starts up for the season and days after the transfer market is closed. AIK will play their Allsvenskan premiere against Gais on Monday 30 March. The match kicks off at 19.10 at Gamla Ullevi in Gothenburg.
AIK is saved from themselves. – This season they look strong, the economy is good and they play in Europe. Of course there will be an argument!!
