When Erik ten Hag “inherited” the Jadon Sancho problem to Manchester United as manager and it really cut out with Sancho, legend and football talker Alan Shearer gave support to the coach. The club had to take the coach’s side and make sure that the player does not cause problems. Now Shearer is once again advocating that the coach must be supported in his treatment of “problem players”.
Marcus Rashford’s form, spark and scoring instinct disappeared like dew in the sun after signing as one of the club’s highest-paid players by far in the summer of 2023. Under Ruben Amorim, United’s former “posterboy” has disappeared further, where it peaked with the interview where Rashford said he “is ready for new challenges”.
After two goals against Everton, it was straight to the bench in the next two games. Against City, Bournemouth and Wolverhampton, the 27-year-old was not even in the squad. Against Newcastle on Boxing Day, Rashford was involved, but sat idle on the bench from start to finish.
Some would argue it is madness of Ruben Amorim not to make use of Rashford’s resource, Alan Shearer thinks it should all be decided by the United manager.
-They (the management) must support Amorim. They’ve brought him in because it hasn’t been anywhere near good enough and he needs to sort out that mess,” Alan Shearer begins, according to Goal.
“He has to be able to do whatever he wants, and the situation with Marcus Rashford will be sorted out. If it gets sorted out in January, I assume both parties will come to an agreement, but it’s part of the process of who he (Amorim) wants out of the club and who he wants to bring in.”
-It is clear that it is not a healthy situation for the club if Marcus does not want to be there and the manager does not want him there either. If that’s the case, then it’s best for both parties that sooner, rather than later, something is sorted out,” Shearer concludes.
