Scotland international Scott McTominay has been a revelation for Napoli since leaving Manchester United before the season.

Never came close to nomination while at Old Trafford!

A sensational comparison between Scott McTominay and Lamine Yamal shows exactly why the Scot should be guaranteed a Ballon d’Or nomination this year. McTominay has been a sensation in his debut season for Napoli, even scoring on a volley against Cagliari on the last matchday as they secured the Serie A title.

The 28-year-old midfielder has not looked back since leaving Manchester United last summer for €25 million to work under former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Antonio Conte at Napoli. (Conte will probably disappear in a few days to take over Juventus)

His decisive contribution earned him the Serie A Most Valuable Player award, an accolade previously won by Cristiano Ronaldo, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Romelu Lukaku.

But he has not received the same recognition as Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, even though both teams won their respective league titles.

This is despite McTominay scoring more league goals (12) compared to Yamal (9) this season.

The 17-year-old Spanish winger is the second favourite to win the Ballon d’Or with odds of 7/2, while McTominay is at 500/1.

Yamal captured the world’s attention last summer with impressive performances for Spain when they won Euro 2024.

He kept this form this season with FC Barcelona as they won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup to complete a national treble.

But they didn’t make it all the way to the top of the Champions League, where they lost a thrilling semi-final 7-6 to Inter Milan over two games.

PSG star Ousmane Dembélé is the heavy favourite to win the prestigious award after the French side completed the treble on Saturday with a 5-0 win over Inter Milan.

The French striker has already won an individual award, when he was named the UEFA Champions League’s “Player of the Year”.

Luis Enrique’s team knocked out three English teams on their way to winning Europe’s premier club competition.

After a penalty shootout win over Liverpool, they beat Aston Villa in the quarter-finals, before defeating Arsenal to secure their place in the final.

Don’t have to wait long that long to find out who is nominated for the Ballon d’Or 2025 as the nominations will be announced in August.

The ceremony will then be held on September 22 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.
