Earlier this month, Steven Gerrard was done in the coaching job for the Saudi Arabian club. Anything but success, the Liverpool legend has run his coaching career really into a dead end. In England, there was one club that saw its opportunity to persuade Gerrard of the job the Liverpool legend would never have accepted before. It ended with a United legend.

League Two club Carlisle United knocked out manager Mike Williamson on the previous one after five defeats in the last six games. According to the Daily Mail, the American owners, who didn’t think it was as cool to own a club at the bottom of the English fourth division, were interested in giving Steven Gerrard the job.

Completely unlikely, but still.

The offer was clearly not considered by Steven Gerrard, because already on Thursday a new coach will be applauded for the job of saving the club from falling outside the professional league system.

Mark Hughes himself has been hired as the new Carlisle United coach. The former Welsh striker hammered in 163 goals in 467 United games, with only eight players ahead of the top scorers list in club history.

As a coach, Hughes managed Wales from 1999 to 2004, after which he has coached Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham, QPR, Stoke, Southampton, then Bradford City in League Two.

Now Hughes will lift the Carlisle players back to their feet, at the very bottom of the League Two table. We wish the United legend the best of luck.
