Manchester United’s search for a new manager is underway after sacking Ruben Amorim, and former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to return to Old Trafford, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.
Amorim has been relieved of his duties after a public outburst following United’s 2-2 draw with Leeds United on Sunday proved to be a step too far for the club’s management.

Former midfielder and current U18 head coach Darren Fletcher has been brought in as interim boss and will be on the bench for United’s game against Burnley on Wednesday.
David Ornstein previously reported how United could wait until the end of the season before bringing in a permanent replacement for Amorim, suggesting that Fletcher could get the role for the rest of the season.
However, according to Manchester World, Solskjaer “will be interested in a shocking return as interim head coach.”
Back in December 2018, the Norwegian first took over United on a temporary basis, and after a fantastic spell, he was given a three-year contract.
Solskjaer led United to sixth, third and second place in the Premier League, before he was finally relieved of his duties in 2021.
Manchester World’s report states: “Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be open to a return to Manchester United on an interim basis until the end of the season.”
“It’s not clear if he will be on the club’s shortlist for the role, but he will be interested in potential discussions about a sensory return to his former club.”
“Solskjaer has remained a fan favourite since his sacking and could be a wise choice to help United achieve their pre-season goals of a top-six finish in the Premier League.”
And it is noteworthy that the reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed these claims.
“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shown interest in taking the Manchester United job as interim manager, regardless of contract length,” Romano posted on social media.
“Man United takes the time to consider candidates for the job. Darren Fletcher will be interim manager this week.”
Many United supporters are open to the idea of Solskjaer returning temporarily, as my colleague Rob McCarthy reported earlier.

Man Utd must wait for top manager goal
Our insider sources, Fraser Fletcher, revealed earlier today that Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is currently United’s “favourite” choice to replace Amorim on a permanent basis.
Glasner is said to be interested in a move to Old Trafford, but he is expected to complete his contract with Palace, which expires at the end of the season.
The Eagles have tried to convince Glasner to sign an extension, but without success, suggesting that the German is eyeing a new challenge.
United will have no choice but to stick with an interim manager for the rest of the season if they decide to wait for Glasner.
If Fletcher is struggling and INEOS decides they need to bring in someone else for the rest of the season, Solskjaer could be the perfect man for the job.
