It was crystal clear, when Ruben Amorim disappeared out of the gate with “two suitcases of pounds” in compensation, that the club should not throw itself at the first and best so-called permanent manager. Here, substitutes were to come in for the rest of the season to create calm. Darren Fletcher was put in charge in the first two games after the sacking of Amorim, without any calm being created. Eventually, it became as certain as the club management would spend until the summer to find the coaches who will lead United from next season, that the substitute who was chosen would not be considered as a permanent solution. Michael Carrick was chosen to lead United until the end of the season on Tuesday night, ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. According to The Athletic , Solskjaer wanted more anyway.

Solskjaer was brought in as a substitute for a few chaotic days before Christmas Eve 2018 to clean up after a grumpy Mourinho who had just been sacked. For the United legend, this was a testing period. After 14 wins in his first 19 games as a super substitute, the United management realised they had found their man. The permanent contract was signed at the end of March 2019.

For Michael Carrick, this option is not on the table. According to The Athletic , Solskjaer was naturally disappointed when the news that he won’t get the temporary job at the club was in his heart, but the English media claim that the Norwegian wanted the job permanently, with a view to a long-term project, rather than just for the rest of the current season.

Solskjaer of course supports Carrick when the decision was made, something else is not to be expected from someone who has spent much of his adult life playing for, managing, or talking about Manchester United. Back in 2023, he stated to The Athletic that Carrick would be the coach of Manchester United if he wanted to.
