There were many who were stunned when the new Newcastle owners brought in Eddie Howe as coach in 2021. The Englishman has a good reputation, but far from the profile “everyone” expected when the Saudi Arabian owners poured money into their new playground at St. James’ Park. It turned out that Eddie Howe was just the right manager for Newcastle, who went from being a relegation candidate to being rigged for Champions League play. Four and a half years after his appointment, Howe’s position is now uncertain.

Newcastle managed to advance to the last eight of the Champions League, but lost to Barcelona. They also managed to make it all the way to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup for the third time in the last four seasons. But in the Premier League, Newcastle have faced great adversity.

In a tight Premier League, they are in 12th place, which is below expectations. Most recently, they lost to Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby, which led to booing from parts of St. James’ Park. It has also started a debate (again) about whether Eddie Howe is the right person to lead the club forward.

Newcastle boss David Hopkinson answers whether Eddie Howe has confidence.

“We don’t have those conversations (about a change of coach),” Hopkinson begins, according to the BBC.

“Eddie is our manager. I expect a good end to the season here, and we will talk about the future when the time is right. Right now we are focusing on this season,” the Newcastle boss continues.

Then comes the answer that sends a signal something is going on before next season.

-… But I have no opinion about his future. What I can say is that the derby loss to Sunderland hurt,” says the Newcastle boss.
