The 33-year-old played his last game for Spurs during a 1-1 draw in a friendly against Newcastle United in his native South Korea, where he wore the captain’s armband.
Son announced his decision to leave Tottenham in a pre-match press conference, despite having one year left on his contract.
“I need a new challenge”
“I have decided to leave the club this summer. The club helps me with this decision,” said an emotional Son.
“This was the hardest decision I’ve made in my career. So many wonderful memories. It was very difficult to make this choice.”
“I need a new environment to challenge myself. I need a little change – 10 years is a long time. I came to North London as a 23-year-old boy, so young. Now I leave the club as a grown man, a proud man.”
“I want to say thank you to all the Spurs fans for all the love. I hope the timing of the resignation is also good, and that this is the right time for this decision. I hope everyone can accept and respect that.”
Son was visibly moved when he was substituted in the 63rd minute during the game against Newcastle, which triggered a hearty farewell applause from the fans.

Record transfer fee for Son
TEAMtalk’s transfer correspondent Fraser Fletcher revealed on July 30 that both Inter Miami and Los Angeles FC from MLS have shown interest in Son.
Son has always preferred a move to the United States over Saudi Arabia, despite interest from clubs in the Gulf state.
Journalist Ben Jacobs has now revealed that LAFC are close to signing Son, with an “agreement in principle” in place with the South Korean winger.
“LAFC has an agreement in principle with Tottenham to sign Son Heung-min. Terms have been agreed with the South Korean international,” Jacobs wrote in social media.
“Arrival time has not been set. Originally planned for this week, but not confirmed yet.”
In a report for GiveMeSport, Jacobs claims that LAFC will pay between $20-26 million for Son – a huge sum for an aging player with only 12 months left on his contract.
Son will immediately become a big player in MLS. As the report points out, the transfer fee could set a new MLS record, which currently stands at $22 million (paid by Atlanta United for Emmanuel Latte Lath this winter).
Bringing an end to Son’s fairytale Tottenham career and bringing a legendary status – including a shared Premier League Golden Boot in 2021/22 – to a new challenge in the United States.
