Steven Gerrard is back from desert football and has started talking like a Liverpool manager, with words of wisdom in connection with the Salah/Slot row and a statement in December that he is ready if the Liverpool management calls. This week he got involved in the team selection of Slot – who saw the same thing as the Liverpool legend.

After Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton and the FA Cup match on Friday against the same opponent, Gerrard was clear about the change Slot had to make.

-They didn’t create enough, didn’t play at the right speed or the right pace, they didn’t have the right quality. He (Slot) has to start Ngumoha now, he has to start him, because he comes in and does more in a short space of time than Gakpo does in 65/70 minutes. He deserves a start now. He (Slot) has to start the kid on Friday night,” Gerrard told TNT Sports on Wednesday.

On Friday, the 17-year-old was in the starting eleven for 69 minutes on the pitch – and did exactly what Gerrard had predicted in the 1-3 win for Liverpool. After the game, it was Rio’s performances that Arne Slot highlighted.

“It says a lot about how good a player he is. Especially because as a 17-year-old you can influence a match between two Premier League teams, it says a lot about how good a player you are,” Slot told the BBC.

This was Ngumoha’s fourth game from the start this season. If it were up to Steven Gerrard, there would be more in the coming months.
