Sir Alex Ferguson’s role at Old Trafford is marginalised by United boss Ratcliffe, but for Fletcher, the coaching legend is the first person to turn to for advice on Manchester United – and approval.

“I don’t mind making big decisions without talking to Sir Alex. I have a very good relationship with Sir Alex, so I wanted to talk to him first and basically get his blessing, to be honest. I think he deserves that respect,” Fletcher said.

The blessing came. We’re also guessing Solskjaer and Carrick have their talks with Ferguson.
