Manchester City have announced the signing of highly valued teenage player Sverre Nypan from Rosenborg.

The 18-year-old midfielder has signed a five-year contract until June 2030 and is moving to the Etihad Stadium for a transfer fee of £12.5 million – a record sum for a player from the Eliteserien.

Minutes before the transfer was announced, Sverre Nypan thanked for four years at Rosenborg on social media:

Dear Rosenborgera, thank you very much for the enormous support I have received through the four years in the club here. It’s been a roller coaster with ups and downs, but it’s the ups and downs that sit again and stay with me in life! Rosenborg is more than just football. It’s culture, unity and a family. I couldn’t have asked for better supporters and surroundings than what I have had at Lerkendal.
It’s a shame to get from a project I really believe in, but I’m happy to follow the gang on 🖤🤍
Thank you so much for everything! Goodbye🫡

No knocking RBK!

Several top clubs were interested

Clubs such as Arsenal and Aston Villa had talks with Nypan earlier this year, along with Manchester City. But it was “The Citizens” who finally reached an agreement to sign the Norwegian U21 international in the middle of last month, before he underwent the medical test.

The reason for the delayed announcement is unknown, but Nypan has now been confirmed as Pep Guardiola’s fifth signing in this transfer window, after Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Marcus Bettinelli.

Rosehip’s Dream Comes True

“I am incredibly happy and proud to have signed for Manchester City,” Nypan told the club’s official website. “It’s a dream for any young footballer to be part of this club and to play alongside so many world-class players.”

“I’m still very young with a lot to learn, but the opportunity to be coached by Pep Guardiola, the best coach in the world, will only help me become a better player.”

“There is already a special connection between Norway and Manchester City through Erling Haaland and Oscar Bobb, and I am very proud to be the last Norwegian player to sign for the club.”

City’s sporting director praises the signing

Manchester City’s new sporting director Hugo Viana added:
“Sverre is an exciting young player who the club has been following closely for a long time. We believe he already has many outstanding qualities, but at only 18 years old, he still has great development potential.”

“We believe he will be an important player for Manchester City in the years to come and we will support him throughout his development.”

What’s the plan for Nypan?

Nypan established himself as one of Europe’s most promising talents after becoming Rosenborg’s youngest player ever when he made his debut as a 15-year-old in 2022.

The versatile midfielder recorded 70 appearances, 14 goals and 11 assists for Rosenborg, in addition to six appearances for Norway’s U21 national team.

Since Viana arrived at the club earlier this year, Manchester City have signed several young talents including Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, Claudio Echeverri, Juma Bah, Cherki and now Nypan.

While some of these players are already integrated into the first team, others – including Nypan – are expected to be loaned out for the 2025/26 season. However, an immediate loan agreement is not in place yet.

There has been speculation that Manchester City have a deal to loan at least one player to Lyon – who avoided relegation from Ligue 1 after a successful appeal – following the signing of France’s Rayan Cherki for £34 million last year.

Nypan will start City’s first-team training on July 28, but whether he will still be at the club before the friendly against Palermo on August 9 remains to be seen.
