Ruud van Nistelrooy took over as super substitute when Erik ten Hag was fired at Manchester United in some chaotic last days of October 2024. Van Nistelrooy brought out the smile and confidence in the United squad, coaching the club to some solid results and putting the whole club on a wave of optimism. Then United boss Ratcliffe and the gang decided to bring in Ruben Amorim directly. A choice that gave United supporters a historic “ass” season.

The Portuguese was given an ultimatum to take the job now, or lose the opportunity. Reluctantly, Sporting’s success coach allowed himself to be persuaded to do the first. Van Nistelrooy had the trust of the players, had been on the training ground with the gang since the summer and had been successful with his formula: “80 percent the same as with Ten Hag, 20 percent Van Nistelrooy”.

Ruben Amorim demanded 100 percent Amorim, Van Nistelrooy was sent to the gate before the Portuguese made his entrance.

The rest is horribly weak history writing at Manchester United. So is Ruben Amorim, who was fired on Monday.

So what’s going on? We shook our heads when the United boss removed super substitute van Nistelrooy to turn everything on its head midway through the season of Amorim football. Will the United gang make the same mistake?

U18 coach Darren Fletcher has been put in charge of the team for Wednesday’s game against Burnley, according to the BBC , United will bring in a replacement for the rest of the season, in other words wait with a “permanent” head coach until after the end of the season.

This substitute will not be Fletcher.

Thus, United are doing what they should have done last season – building on what has already been done with a replacement. Then bring in the next main reindeer who get a “calm” start with pre-season.
