A few hours ago, there were reports that someone saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United’s coaching facility Carrington. Now, rumours of a return for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have reached a boiling point following reports from the BBC.

Michael Carrick, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Darren Fletcher, who all have multiple Premier League titles with Manchester United and who know the club’s DNA better than most, should be very much in the running for a return to Old Trafford.

We at Sporten have always said that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be reunited with Michael Carrick at Old Trafford, so we naturally have good faith that this could be the salvation for Manchester United.

The BBC writes that Manchester United have held preliminary talks with former players Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about becoming the club’s interim manager for the rest of the season.

The talks are at a very early, exploratory stage, and it is not yet known who is the lead candidate to temporarily replace Ruben Amorim for the rest of the season. Amorim was sacked on Monday after a turbulent 14-month rule, and former United midfielder Darren Fletcher was appointed interim manager.

The Scot will remain in place until an interim manager is appointed, while the club plans to appoint a permanent successor to Amorim in the summer. Director of Football Jason Wilcox has spoken to Fletcher and his former United teammates Solskjaer and Carrick about taking the role, while another former United player, Ruud van Nistelrooy, is also believed to be a candidate.

Van Nistelrooy managed three wins and one draw in his four games as interim boss in 2024. Solskjaer first took over in a similar fashion when United sacked Jose Mourinho in 2018, and he then became a full-time manager for three years before leaving in 2021.

Carrick has been out of work since leaving Middlesbrough last June. Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi – now at Marseille – are understood to be early candidates for the permanent job.

Glasner, who won the FA Cup with the Eagles last season, was asked about the link during his press conference on Tuesday.

He said: “I’m a Crystal Palace manager and there’s no point in you asking me any more questions about it.”
