Michael Carrick is the interim manager after Ruben Amorim was sacked a few weeks ago. – It has been a very good start with four wins and one draw in his first five games. – It is probably not enough for part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe who wants a big name and everyone is sure they now know who the British billionaire wants.
Sky Sports and MEN report that: – Manchester United make “one of the best managers in the world” their top candidate
Manchester United are looking for a new permanent manager before the 2026/2027 season and England boss Thomas Tuchel is now the preferred candidate.

I’ll honestly admit that I’ve never been a big fan of the German manager. His stats – despite having managed an impressive number of clubs – are not good enough for him to be called one of the world’s best. Besides, he’s boring.
Michael Carrick was brought in as interim manager until the end of the season in January, and he has made a phenomenal start with four wins in five games, plus one draw. As things stand, Carrick looks set to leave the club at the end of the season – unless he impresses enough to convince United management to give him the job on a permanent basis.
Carrick has undoubtedly improved Manchester United in recent weeks, but whether that is enough for him to continue remains to be seen.
Have identified preferred candidate
According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, England manager Tuchel is the preferred candidate to take over from Carrick in the summer. Tuchel is now in the driver’s seat, as neither Luis Enrique nor Carlo Ancelotti are interested in the role at Old Trafford.
Tuchel’s contract with England expires after the World Cup later this year, which means he is free to return to club football in the summer. Whether he stays with England will probably depend on how far the team goes in the championship – and it is unclear if he wants to stay, even if they win the World Cup.
Tuchel, who Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta has described as “one of the best managers in the world”, will undoubtedly bring a long-awaited winning mentality to United. He has won the Champions League with Chelsea and achieved great things in football. It is therefore no surprise that the Red Devils are showing interest.
Must discuss Carrick appointment
There must be someone in the United management who is tempted by the idea of giving Carrick the job on a permanent basis. The results so far speak for themselves, and bringing Kobbie Mainoo back into the heat and getting the best out of him is a very positive sign.
The United players seem to thrive under the former Middlesbrough manager, and he is definitely someone the players and supporters can rally behind. In addition, he has handled the media pressure well – something the previous manager Ruben Amorim was criticized for.
Manchester United, who were the world’s biggest and best club, are now working on putting in place their ninth manager since the best Sir Alex Ferguson retired almost 13 years ago.
