Roma owners Friedkin Group have, after an approval process in recent months, received approval for their purchase of a majority stake in Everton.

BBV reports that the purchase has been approved for £400 million.

The Friedkin Group, led by American businessman Dan Friedkin, already owns the Italian capital club AS Roma. The purchase of Everton was announced around three months ago, but the Premier League first needed to approve the deal before the ownership becomes active. The league has now done so.

Friedkin replaces Farhad Moshiri as the majority owner of the club. Friedkin is expected to become chairman of Everton, with Marc Watts as chief executive. The latter will be actively responsible for the management of the club.

Dan Freidkin comments on the purchase in an open letter.

“I am extremely proud to welcome one of England’s most historic football clubs to our global family, the Friedkin Group. Everton has a proud history and we are honoured to be overseen by this great institution”.

“Although we are new to the club, we fully understand the important role Everton plays in local culture, history and the lives of Everton supporters here and around the world.”

Everton have weakened at the bottom of the Premier League in recent seasons and are struggling with financial problems.

The club is currently in 16th place.
