Three-time world champion Mark Cavendish retires! Cavendish announced in a press conference on Monday that this season is his last. A cyclist will put his bike away at 38 years old.
Mark Cavendish is a 38-year-old cyclist from Great Britain. He is a three-time Madison world champion, world champion in the mass-start elite race, and a silver medalist from the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Cavendish announced his retirement on the final rest day of this year’s Giro d’Italia. “So far I’ve loved racing every kilometer of this race, so I feel like this is the perfect time to say that this is my last Giro d’Italia and 2023 will be my last season as a professional cyclist.” Cavendish admitted at a press conference. The Brit hopes to add at least one more to his 53 stage wins.
Cavendish will attempt to break the Tour de France record for most stage wins when this year’s race starts in July. Cavendish equaled Eddy Merckx’s 34 stage wins at the 2021 Tour, but was left off the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl roster for the following year’s race, despite having just won his second British Championship title.
