Unbeknownst to manager Ruben Amorim and Manchester United, Sancho was one of the high-profile names placed in the “bomb squad” and forced to train away from the first team while trying to find a new club.
Sancho was linked with a whole host of clubs during the summer transfer window, but eventually ended up signing on loan for Aston Villa on the final day of the transfer window.
The 25-year-old spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Chelsea and helped them secure qualification for the Champions League, as well as scoring in a Conference League final victory.
However, Chelsea chose not to sign Sancho permanently, and reportedly paid a £5 million penalty fee to United.
Sancho has made eight appearances in all competitions for Villa, amassing 336 minutes of playing time.
His only starts have come in the Europa League and in a win over Manchester City, where Sancho was replaced by Unai Emery after he had only come on to replace the injured Emi Buendía.
Sancho still has a contract with United until 2027, but according to talkSPORT, Manchester United are willing to terminate his £200,000 per week contract early and let him leave for free to finally get him off the payroll.
With reports that Villa do not want to sign him, his former club Borussia Dortmund, where he had the best years of his career and returned on loan to help them reach the Champions League final in 2024, has been mentioned as a possible destination.
However, insiders from SPORT1 say that Sancho’s name is not being discussed by the club for the future, despite his love for BVB.
Speaking on the Die Dortmund Woche podcast, reporter Oliver Müller called the links to Dortmund “nothing more than a fairytale concept” and that he is “no longer a sought-after good”.
Both he and fellow reporter Manfred Sedlbauer, who said that Sancho to Dortmund is “like Groundhog Day every six months”, dismissed that the Ruhr club has any serious interest in Sancho.
Aston Villa pay 80 percent of Sancho’s substantial wages while he is on loan, but their deal does not include a forced purchase clause or breach clause.
