The smoke has not yet settled at the San Siro after Sunday’s World Cup qualifying match. “All” of Norway is still celebrating, while all of (literally) Italy alternates between deep football grief and anger. For almost three decades, we have thought we were worthy of a new World Cup ticket, on Sunday it could be picked up at the San Siro after the 1-4 victory, where the world’s best goalkeeper (and Haaland buddy) had to apologize after the game.
You have probably read through all the coverage in the Norwegian media, we always think it is entertaining to hear how the English media covers success (or lack of success) for Norway or Bodø/Glimt.

Here is the BBC’s summary of Italy – Norway.
“Erling Haaland scored two goals in as many minutes and thus cemented Norway’s return to a World Cup for the first time in 28 years in style, with victory over Italy.”
“The Norwegians beat Estonia on Thursday and all but secured their place in next year’s tournament. Italy had to win by nine goals to secure first place.”
“Pio Esposito gave them a glimmer of hope to achieve the seemingly impossible when he scored after 11 minutes. They dominated after that, but couldn’t find another goal before half-time.”
“The second half belonged to Norway and Haaland.”
“Antonio Nusa hammered in an excellent shot to equalise before Haaland volleyed in a great way following a cross from Manchester City teammate Oscar Bobb.”
“The striker, who had been silent until the goal, quickly scored his second goal, making it an incredible 16 goals in eight qualifying games for Norway.”
“Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Jørgen Strand Larsen secured a dream victory when he scored in injury time.”
“Norway’s qualification means Haaland will follow in the footsteps of his father, Alf Inge, who played for his country in their last World Cup participation in 1998.”

“Italy will participate in the playoffs, which have been a source of heartache and embarrassment lately. They lost 1-0 on aggregate to Sweden and thus missed out on the 2018 World Cup, and four years later they suffered one of their most humiliating defeats, beating 1-0 at home to North Macedonia, putting an end to their hopes of qualifying for the tournament in 2022.”
We thank the BBC for the tribute. World Cup, here we come!!
