Ruben Amorim was sacked by Manchester United on January 5 after their 1-1 draw away to Leeds United. – He was bought free from the Sporting on 11 November 2024 after delivering historic success in Portugal. There were 63 games for Manchester United with shockingly worse results.
That Ruben Amorim was sacked was no surprise, it was more surprising Manchester United waited so long.

The specific reason behind why Rúben Amorim has so far chosen not to address his departure from Manchester United has emerged.
After the Leeds game, before he was sacked, he made statements that could easily be interpreted as an indirect criticism of the club’s management, including director of football Jason Wilcox. He somewhat strangely stated that he had joined Manchester United to be “a manager, not a coach”.
Darren Fletcher first took over on an interim basis, before his former United midfield colleague Michael Carrick was appointed interim manager for the rest of the season.
Almost a month after his departure, Amorim has still not spoken out about his United departure or publicly spoken out to the club’s supporters.
Louis van Gaal issued a statement when United decided to sack him in 2016, while club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was interviewed by United’s media team after he was sacked in 2021.
But José Mourinho waited a month before commenting on his departure, during a segment as a pundit for beIN Sports.
Amorim’s lack of comment so far is therefore not exactly a big surprise, and the Daily Mail is now reporting what specifically is the reason behind the Portuguese’s decision.
According to “well-placed sources in Portugal”, they claim, Amorim has chosen to wait until the end of the season before addressing his United departure.
It is added that the 40-year-old has chosen to do this so as not to cause a distraction away from United’s pursuit of Champions League qualification under new interim manager Carrick.
Carrick has led the club to three consecutive victories under his leadership so far, including a convincing 2-0 win over Manchester City at Old Trafford and a 3-2 win away to Arsenal.
United also defeated Fulham 3-2 at home on Sunday, after leading 2-0 before the Cottagers scored twice late in the second half. Benjamin Šeško’s winning goal in the 98th minute secured the victory.

While Amorim has kept quiet in public, his United assistant Carlos Fernandes posted a farewell message on Instagram last month.
He wrote: “Thank you, Manchester United.”
“Thank you to the world-class players I had the privilege to coach and learn from. Thank you to the staff who showed genuine support. Thank you to the fans who stood by us.”
“Finally, working at a football club of this dimension doesn’t just test your knowledge – it reveals character.”
“A special chapter in my life. Proud to have served as an assistant coach for Manchester United.”
At the very end, Sporten.com’s financial expert team would like to point out that Ruben Amorim has a solid bonus, which still applies as he led Manchester United for over half of the season related to the Champions League and Europa League qualification.
