The reason for the delay in Martin Zubimendi’s transfer to Arsenal has been revealed.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi appears to be on his way out this summer, and it has been widely reported that Arsenal have agreed a deal for the Basque player to come to London. Despite the fact that these reports appeared some time ago, the transfer has not yet been made public.

Zubimendi has a buyout clause of €60 million, and this is the amount Arsenal will have to pay to sign him. After attempts by Liverpool and Barcelona to sign Zubimendi earlier, it seems that it is the Gunners who will finally complete the transfer. He will then be reunited with former teammates Martin Ødegaard and Mikel Merino, as well as compatriot Mikel Arteta.

But Real Madrid have also shown consistent interest in Zubimendi, and despite the apparent impending transfer, media in Madrid insist that they will continue to try to get him to change his mind until the deal is official. Beyond being Real Madrid, their biggest pull is that Zubimendi’s idol, Xabi Alonso, is now the club’s new manager.
