It starts from for the son of a Manchester United legend, we believe he will soon make a name for himself in the Football League.

Ruben Butt scored his first senior goals for Salford City on Tuesday night as they advanced in the Vertu Trophy. Karl Robinson will be hoping to repeat the club’s 2021 triumph in the tournament after winning the postponed final four years ago.

Butt had previously made four first-team appearances for the Ammies after coming up through the club’s youth department.

However, the group stage match marked a first start for the 18-year-old, who is the son of former midfielder Nicky Butt. The teenager’s two second-half goals helped his team secure a third win in three games in this year’s tournament.

His first goal saw Butt receive the ball on his left before cutting in on his right foot as he broke into the box.

He then curled a low shot into the far corner to extend Salford’s lead.

Butt secured his second goal just five minutes later after latching on to a long ball over the top to slip between the goalkeeper’s legs.

His two goals came as part of a starting eleven that also included Premier League cult hero Fabio Borini.

The Italian striker joined Salford on a free transfer last month after stints at Chelsea, Liverpool, Sunderland and AC Milan.

As for Butt, he made his senior level debut for the club in November 2024 while still only 17 years old.

The youth department’s product has since played in the league and the Carabao Cup already this season.

His father also has a strong connection to Salford, having bought the club along with the Class of ’92 in 2014. Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs joined Butt as co-owners to help the club climb into the Football League.

Salford later managed to secure four promotions in five seasons to rise from the eighth tier to League Two. Butt later spent two years as CEO between 2022 and 2024 before selling his stake in the club in May this year.

As a player, he won 39 caps for England as well as playing 411 Premier League games for United, Newcastle and Birmingham. His time at Old Trafford also saw Butt win 18 trophies, including the Champions League and eight league titles.
