Sir Jim Ratcliffe stepped in as Manchester United boss and part-owner with the goal of getting the best people. For the sporting director job, Dan Ashworth was the chosen one, the fact that he then worked at Newcastle was no obstacle for Ratcliffe and the United management. Ashwort, after much arguing and paying compensation to Newcastle, ended up at Old Trafford. Here he had the status for 159 days as “one of the industry’s best”. Then it was fired/”mutual agreement”. Now Ashwort is back after a stint in his job as an advisor for a cricket club.
Ashworth was linked to Arsenal for a while, but the London club went for Andrea Berta. Now Ashworth is returning to the English Football Association (FA) instead.

Ashworth worked for the FA from 2013 to 2019 before Brighton, Newcastle and Manchester United. On Wednesday, he will be inducted as chief football officer. He will work on the strategy around both the men’s and women’s teams, and will also be responsible for the development of St. George’s Park, where the England national team is based.
“Dan is an extremely influential and respected person in the industry, and he has worked for English football for many years. We are very pleased to welcome him back in this new role,” says CEO Mark Bullingham.
