Just like in the Eliteserien, there is a distribution key of TV revenues according to which place you have on the table when the year is over.
Last year, Manchester City, who won the Premier League, received £172 million, while the second-placed club Arsenal received £3.1 million less, and so it went down to number 20.
Manchester United, who are now in 14th place in the Premier League after 19 games, will probably not be able to recruit players in the January transfer window due to huge deficits over several years and now reduced revenues.
Manchester United have already taken a big blow less than a day into the January transfer window – and the potential for a “points deduction” for several clubs has emerged.
Amorim, 39, will no doubt want to recruit his own choice of players, but may not be able to do so as MEN’s Samuel Luckhurst reported that the club has “no budget” to “strengthen” their squad in this month’s transfer window.
It is claimed that United’s £206.06 million summer spending has left them without the funds to recruit players this month. Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte and Leny Yoro were all welcomed to the club by Erik ten Hag last summer.
“Sources” have explained that the club would have to “sell for more than they buy” in order to come within the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability (PSR) rules as well as financial fair play rules.
And if the club were to violate the PSR, this could result in severe penalties. Last season, both Everton and Nottingham Forest were given points deductions for breaching financial rules, with the Toffees receiving a ten-point deduction – reduced to six on appeal – in November 2023 before being deducted a further two points in April 2024.
Forest received a four-point deduction for breach of the PSR, in March 2024.
The club appealed, but the sanctions were upheld by an appeals body after the case was heard on April 24, 2024, according to BBC Sport.
So, if United break the financial rules put in place, they could also risk being awarded points deductions, but this is not currently believed to be a prospect.
However, funds can be raised by selling or loaning players, which will free up United’s large wage bill. Yesterday, the Mail reported that up to seven players could be “sold” in current or future transfer windows.
It was reported on December 31 that four Premier League clubs faced a “nervous wait” after the league’s PSR deadline, but United were not included.
The Mirror claimed that Chelsea, Forest, Everton and relegation-threatened Leicester are “all at potential risk of points deductions” if they are found to have recorded losses in excess of £105 million allowed by the league. The club argues that much of their costs can be linked to investments in infrastructure that should not be “included” in the balance sheet.
Ruben Amorim, many believe, is safe until the summer, just like with Erik ten Hag, the Portuguese manager will get a good chunk of money if he is sacked and then it will cost money to bring in a new one.
After the Red Devils’ 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle on Monday, Amorim discussed the prospect of signings in the window.
“We don’t have that opportunity [to sign] in January if we don’t take any players out,” Amorim said [via BBC Sport].
“You know the situation better than I do.
“It’s not that I come here knowing I can spend money to change the team.”
