Cristian Romero is considered one of the world’s best centre-backs. However, the Argentine world champion has had some troubled last few seasons at Tottenham. In the current season, the Spurs captain has lashed out at the Tottenham owners, drawing a four-match ban, while he and Mickey van de Ven, one of the Premier League’s best centre-back duos, have not stopped the relegation ghost from embracing the London club. Three clubs are following developments closely, because the three should have a unique competitive advantage.

Romero signed a contract with Tottenham in 2022 after a trial round on loan from Atalanta, after the Europa League title, the Argentine extended his contract until 2029. According to Marca , this included a special clause, which is now in force.

The Spanish media claims this clause applies to Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona. If Romero wants to sign with one of the three La Liga clubs, this will be done for the stipulated “only” 60 million euros.

Romero had the foresight to secure a quick exit plan. We will be surprised if the 27-year-old does not take advantage of this this summer.
