Out of the FA Cup, out of the Champions League before the biggest fun has begun, without a title in the League Cup after Sunday’s final loss. United legend Jamie Carragher thinks the final against Newcastle was horribly weak by the Reds, but doesn’t want to criticise Liverpool in particular. Carragher explains why Liverpool’s attack under Klopp was so unique.
Mo Salah has been exceptional this season, but has been almost invisible against PSG and Newcastle last week, but Carragher does not agree that the top scorer should be blamed for Liverpool’s two costly losses.
“I think the last week has shown that Liverpool still have a lot to improve. They lack speed in attack, and I feel very sorry for Salah, because he has received a lot of criticism after the games against PSG, where he faced what is perhaps the world’s best left-back in Nuno Mendes. He didn’t play a good game today, but he doesn’t get help from any of the other attackers either,” Carragher begins, before highlighting the difference to the Liverpool attack under Klopp.
“It’s not like when Liverpool had Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino who could also help in the crucial games under Jürgen Klopp. The attacking players Liverpool now have are good players, but they are not world-class players.
Liverpool are still cruising towards the Premier League title, but investment in attacking players and an extension with Mo Salah will probably be needed before next season. This has become clear over the past week. When the biggest star is neutralized, the next player steps forward, then the next.
