The 61-year-old was sacked after Monday’s 3-1 home loss to relegation-threatened Derby County – a loss that almost ends the Baggies’ hopes of making the play-offs in the Championship. The former Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough boss was appointed Albion head coach in January, almost 16 years after he left the Hawthorns for Celtic in June 2009.
He replaced Carlos Corberan who left the club to take over at Spanish top team Valencia with the Baggies in seventh place in the table.
Tony Mowbray’s time as West Bromwich manager is over after Monday’s 3-1 defeat at home to Derby. The club confirms on their official channels that both Mowbray and assistant coach Mark Venus will be fired.
“The club would like to thank Tony and Mark for their efforts, but have now chosen to go their separate ways after a period of disappointing results,” reads a statement from the club.
West Bromwich started the season with the goal of fighting for promotion to the Premier League, but are currently in 10th place in the Championship with only two league rounds left. The team is six points behind Coventry in the last qualifying place, which practically rules out the possibility of a play-off.
