Tottenham are making significant progress in their pursuit of Liverpool striker Harvey Elliott, with negotiations between the clubs now “accelerating” following James Maddison’s injury, journalist Steve Kay reveals.

The Europa League winners are likely to have lost Maddison for the entire 2024/25 season after a serious cruciate ligament injury in a friendly against Newcastle. The club is now looking for an emergency solution, with less than four weeks left in the transfer window.

Tottenham’s long-term interest
Tottenham have long been admirers of Elliott and even had talks with Liverpool before Maddison’s injury. Head coach Thomas Frank is particularly keen to bring the 22-year-old player to North London.

Frank reportedly had direct talks with Elliott last week, where he presented a vision of using the “special” England Under-21 international in the role of attacking midfielder. Elliott is, according to Frank, “central” in the plans for Spurs next season.

Spurs rush to sign Harvey Elliott
According to Kay, Frank is a big admirer of Elliott’s technical skills and is willing to give him a significant role in the first team next season.

Elliott, who only started two Premier League games for Liverpool in 2024/25, is keen to leave Anfield to secure more game time. He sees a move to Tottenham as an ideal opportunity to get back to his best form.

He is also aiming to secure a place in England’s World Cup squad next year and further impress Thomas Tuchel, after strong performances at the Under-21 European Championship this summer.

Elliott was named the tournament’s best player after leading England U21s to the title, and he scored five goals – the second-highest in the competition.

Key stats: Elliott has scored 15 goals and provided 10 assists in 147 appearances for Liverpool.

Liverpool’s demands
According to Kay, Liverpool are open to selling Elliott for a sum of around £40 million and insist on a buy-back clause in any deal. Tottenham are said to be willing to meet all their demands.

Competition from RB Leipzig
Elliott is also a strong target for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, who are exploring a deal after identifying him as a potential replacement for Xavi Simons, who is on his way to Chelsea.

Thus, Tottenham may have to act quickly to secure the signing of a player Frank sees as crucial for the season ahead.
