The fact that Tottenham have today taken the opportunity to extend the deal of captain Son Heung-min by a year until the summer of 2026 is no guarantee that the 32-year-old will stay at the London club for that long.
Son, 32, is the club captain of Spurs, and despite being an outstanding player with 169 goals and 90 assists in 431 appearances for the club, he has come under fire for his unusually poor form so far this season.
In the 2024/25 season, the South Korean has scored seven times in 23 appearances in all competitions. He has delivered at a slower pace in recent months. As a result, he has been linked with a potential move away from the club as his contract expires in the summer.
But today, Tottenham report that the 32-year-old is no longer on an expiring deal. The club has exercised the right to keep him on until 2026.
The South Korean striker has been at Tottenham since he was signed from Leverkusen in 2015. In the autumn, he will turn ten years as a Premier League player if he stays that long.
He was previously linked with a shock move to Manchester United, after speaking about how he was a fan of the club as a youngster because of Park Ji-sung. A move to the Red Devils is unlikely as his age does not match the many Ruben Amorim and owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ‘transfer policy’ of bringing in players who are 26 years old or younger.
According to El Nacional, Barcelona, even with the financial constraints the club is operating under, are very eager to reach a deal. Barcelona president Joan Laporta is 100% sure the club’s financial problems will soon be over and that La Liga will approve a sharply increased salary cap from next season.
It is tempting to make a transition for several reasons, not just climate and economy. Tottenham are a long way from qualifying for the Champions League with a full 12 points up on Chelsea in the bottom qualifying place. While Barcelona won another Champions League tournament.
