English Goal describes it as a “shock exit” from European football for Timo Werner, we call it predictable. For the 29-year-old, there is an opportunity where he actually retains the stardom he earned at the top until 2020 – in a key role.

After Timo Werner returned in the summer from a less successful loan spell at Tottenham, it was reported that the 29-year-old no longer had a future at RB Leipzig, the club he was the big attacking star at before his move to Chelsea in 2020.

Few Tottenham players have been so openly scolded by Ange Postecoglou as Timo Werner. The German, who flopped at Chelsea, returned to RB Leipzig for another flop, was brought to Tottenham in 2024 on loan and is now back at Leipzig. This summer, desperate efforts were made to transfer the employer responsibility for Werner to someone else.

Werner has taken a dizzying plunge from the top of his career as a top scorer at RB Leipzig, to now, five years later. Before youngest player to reach 150 and 200 Bundesliga games, now without clubs willing to pay close to the 50 million euros Chelsea transferred to RB Leipzig in 2020. According to Sport1 , RB Leipzig opened the door to selling the 29-year-old for €4 million. Still an insane amount of money outside the biggest leagues in the world of football, but a price that signals that the process with Werner will not have any other outcome than a sale.

When the transfer window closed, however, Werner was still at the club. Now the German stands with 1 game on the bench, another with 1 minute of playing time. Then the rest outside the match squad.

According to Sky Sports , MLS club San Jose Earthquakes have now taken an active step in persuading the 29-year-old to move to American football. The MLS club, looking to make some big moves in the transfer market after a difficult season, has identified Werner as its primary target and is willing to offer him “a break” from his current stagnation in Saxony.

Sources claim sporting director/coach Bruce Arena has taken the unusual step of personally contacting Werner’s representatives to present the project. The 73-year-old is looking for a “Designated Player” – a signing with a salary outside the MLS salary cap – who can become the face of the club. By engaging directly with the players’ camp, Arena hopes to convince Werner that a move to the West Coast is not a partial retirement, but a chance to be the main man in a team built entirely around his strengths.
