Manager Thomas Frank, who is really in a rough patch after a series of poor results, has been told that he is okay for now and that he will get money in January for player purchases. The Danish manager wants to get a new attacking player on board in January.
The London club are in the bottom half of the Premier League table, so it’s no wonder there are some murmurs.
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly planning the stunning hijacking of a winger target for both Chelsea and Liverpool, having matched the €70 million bid that their London rivals have on the table.

Bringing in a new left winger is arguably the club’s biggest priority in the winter window, as Thomas Frank has so far failed to find the right solution for that position since Son Heung-min left the club in the summer. Several options have been tried without much success, which has led Tottenham to be linked with an exit for players such as Antoine Semenyo, Ademola Lookman and Maghnes Akliouche.
In Spain, it is claimed that Spurs are looking to leapfrog rivals such as Chelsea and Liverpool and secure the striking signing of Athletic Bilbao striker Nico Williams instead.
The Spanish international is widely regarded as one of the best wingers in European football and has recorded a combined 49 goals and assists in 91 career games from the left wing.
According to a report by dubious Spanish media outlet Fichajes, Chelsea have already offered €70 million to sign the Spanish international striker. However, they are now expected to face competition from Tottenham, who have decided to match that offer.
The report adds that Bilbao may be tempted to accept that offer, although at this stage it is unclear which club they will be willing to sell to. It is also reported that both clubs are willing to triple Williams’ current salary to convince him to sign.
Nico Williams to Tottenham a wow signing, but…
If Spurs could complete the signing of Williams in January, it would no doubt be a real statement of intent from the main owners ENIC.
The Lewis family have invested a further £100 million in the club ahead of the winter window to improve Frank’s squad, and getting Williams on board would do just that.
However, Fichajes is by no means the most reliable source, and there must be some doubt about the validity of the report, as much as Tottenham supporters would love it to be true.
When you also add in the report that says “both clubs are willing to triple his wages”, that’s where things really start to fall apart.
According to Capology, Williams currently earns £263,000 a week at Bilbao and, remarkably, is under contract until 2035. Without even adding to his current salary, the Spaniard would immediately become Tottenham’s highest-paid player, and by a good margin.
However, there may be some hope of signing a player who has also been on Liverpool’s radar for a long time.
Bilbao are currently a long way from the top four in LaLiga, and if their chances of Champions League qualification look bleak towards January, the exciting winger could decide that it is the right time to make the move – especially when it has been suggested in the past that he is excited about the possibility of playing in the Premier League.
The wage structure could still pose an issue, but if Tottenham are serious about changing the club’s profile and genuinely want to challenge for the biggest titles, then the signing of Williams could set a precedent for the future.
