When Karim Benzema decides to change Saudi Arabian clubs, the red carpet is automatically rolled out. For Darwin Nunez, the arrival of the league’s second biggest profile has given him a bad development. This is not just a matter of losing playing time to the Real Madrid legend, here the Uruguayan international loses access to the match arena.

Saudi Arabian clubs can only register eight foreign players in their squad, after Simone Inzaghi and Al Hilal jumped at the opportunity to sign Benzema, the club chose to define Darwin Nunez as the ninth man to be left out of the domestic league matchday squad.

For Nunez, this means the “Champions League” as the opportunity to work for the €15 million salary he has received since his transfer from Liverpool in 2025.

Inzaghi explains the situation to Nunez (and Pablo Mari who meets the same fate)

“It was a difficult decision, but that’s what it’s like to be a coach. You have to make a lot of decisions every day. Nunez and Mari are good players. I want them in all tournaments, but there are only some restrictions on foreign players,” Inzaghi says dryly, according to the Daily Mail.

Nunez has 9 goals in 24 games, but has to give way.
