Tyler Morton worked his way up the Liverpool academy, was brought to the first-team squad in 2021, but never managed to be a success at Liverpool. After a loan spell at Blackburn, Hull and playing in 14 poor games at Liverpool, it was time for the defensive midfielder to move in 2025. Then it came off immediately.

Since his move to Lyon, the 23-year-old has become one of the profiles in Ligue 1 as a regular in the first eleven under coach Paulo Fonseca. In an interview, the Englishman talks about his first time in France – and the Liverpool slump.

“Paulo Fonseca is an incredible manager. He has helped me so much. I’ve discovered things I didn’t even know I had as a footballer. I was so hungry to play again and rediscover my love for football,” Morton told the BBC.

“It’s very difficult when you’re not playing. It’s so tough. You don’t get to show everyone how good you are. I’ve never been hungrier to play football in my life,” Morton continued.

“As soon as Lyon came on the pitch, I had nothing else in mind. It’s a huge club, and the support here is incredible. Moving away from home was always going to be a big challenge, but it was exactly what I wanted and I felt ready. I wanted to show people that I could be a leader, and hopefully that’s what I’ve done,” the former Liverpool player concludes.

Tyler Morton is at it in earnest.
