Bruno Fernandes was so closely linked to the Saudi Arabian league that many thought the Portuguese had grown tired of Manchester United. The captain stayed at Old Trafford, now he talks about the long process that involved Ronaldo – and why he chose to continue at Man Utd.

On Saturday, Fernandes will wear the Man Utd shirt for the 300th time. Had it been up to Cristiano Ronaldo, this milestone would not have been reached.

“I spoke to Cristiano about the situation, about Saudi and everything, I don’t want to say what he told me, but we talked about it. Of course, he now also has a manager [Jorge Jesus] who spoke to me at the time. He was at Al-Hilal for three years. I told him [Jorge Jesus, former Sporting coach] that I wasn’t eager to move, to go to Saudi Arabia, because I wanted to stay at the club,” the United captain told the Manchester Evening News.

“Cristiano told me that he had his opinion on what I should do, and that was important to me. Of course, with all the experience he has, it was important for me to hear what he thought. But of course, the decision will always be made by me and the club,” Fernandes continues.

Which was asked the most important question by his wife, Ana Pinho.

“The first thing she said was of course ‘have you achieved everything you want to achieve at the club?’, because she knows that I haven’t. And when I talk about how I haven’t fulfilled all my dreams at the club, a lot of it comes from what she said to me. And if I don’t try, I definitely won’t,” Fernandes says.
