When you sign as a Manchester United manager or player, you know you have a gallery of United legends who measure you based on the good old days under Alex Ferguson. Still, it’s worth noting when Neville, Ferdinand or Scholes rant about Manchester United’s condition. For Scholes, the foundation of the United squad is barely enough for survival in the Premier League.
This time it is United’s central defence that Scholes is struggling with.
In The Overlap Fan Debate, Scholes analyzes his way through the performances of three of the centre-backs. First up is Lisandro Martinez.
“Even when he’s fit, he’s not good enough to win the Premier League with,” Scholes begins.
Now to De Ligt.
“His (De Ligt’s) age (25) and his number of clubs worry me. He was brilliant at Ajax, but he seems to be getting worse with age. Bayern Munich and Juventus let him go for a reason, Scholes continues.
Then he points the finger at the club management.
– Where are the ambitions (for the club)? I’m talking about building a team that can win the Premier League. Will they win the Premier League with De Ligt and Yoro as their centre-backs?
19-year-old Yoro doesn’t escape either.
“He’s a young player, but I haven’t liked what I’ve seen so far. Did you watch the Southampton game? But he’s a young player, he’s a centre-back I’d keep,” Scholes continues.
Then comes the conclusion of Scholes, where he has mentally prepared for Manchester United, the club in his heart, to disappear from the top division.
“It may sound ridiculous, but if they don’t get it done this summer, and considering the team’s form, they could be relegated. I stand for it, it’s been so bad. There are several things that are worrying. There is a lot he (Amorim) has to do, everyone knows that, especially in the transfer windows. But I don’t see any backbone in the team,” grumbles Scholes.
