Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is banning transgender cyclists who have undergone post-pubertal gender reassignment from participating in women’s races on its international calendar and offering them an alternative.
UCI President David Lappartient announced that in the light of current scientific knowledge on the impact of gender reassignment procedures on sports performance, he bans transgender cyclists from participating in women’s cycling races. At the same time, Lappartinet assures the openness and tolerance of the UCI, informing that in the future this regulation may be changed as knowledge about the impact of gender reassignment procedures on sporting results increases. The UCI president also offers transgender riders an alternative solution.
The UCI has announced that transgender athletes will be able to participate in the so-called international, non-professional Masters events where the men’s category will be renamed “Men’s/Open”, featuring athletes who do not qualify for participation in the women’s category.
