When Manchester City signed Pep Guardiola in 2016, the Spaniard was already one of the world’s best coaches. This does not stop another Spaniard, without much merit, from appointing himself as a candidate to replace Guardiola at City.
Michel has shown some of his potential at City’s sister club in Spain, Girona. In his first season in 2021, Michel led the club to promotion to La Liga, in the 2023/24 season Girona finished the first part of the season in first place, tied with Real Madrid with 48 points. On May 4, 2024, he led his team to a 4–2 victory over Barcelona, thus securing their first-ever qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

This season, Girona are back in 12th place after 28 games, but “only” seven points up on 7th place and Conference League qualification. Michel himself believes he is ready to lead any club in the world.
“I see myself as ready. I’m ready to coach any club,” Michel said in an interview with Mundo Deportivo.
When asked if this also applies to City, the Girona coach understands that he needs to be a little less handsome in his statements about his employer.
“I don’t know if they see it the same way. Of course, it’s not the same, but I have the ability to adapt, and I want to experience it,” Michel said.

If Guardiola fails to achieve results this season as well, various English media believe that an opening at City could come this summer. At least Michel is ready.
